Today's Vice Presidential nomination of Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin, mother of a child with Down syndrome, brings national attention to the approximately 350,000 individuals with Down syndrome living in the United States.
The Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation (DSRTF), a nonprofit organization in existence since 2004, is the leading private source of funding for Down syndrome cognitive research in the US.
Groundbreaking research results made possible as a result of DSRTF support have provided promise that cognitive issues, involving memory, learning and language, as well as Alzheimer's disease, can now be addressed for individuals with Down syndrome.
The research that DSRTF supports also has a direct and broad applicability to the general population, particularly regarding the study of atherosclerotic disease and solid tumor cancers, such as breast and colon cancer.
