International health group the Institute for Health Improvement (IHI) has announced that Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton is the top performing hospital in an innovative scheme to further improve patient safety.

In 2006, Musgrove Park Hospital became 1 of 20 hospitals awarded a place on the Safer Patient Initiative project (SPI). The initiative was set up to test ways of making care safer in three areas of the hospital - on the wards, before, during and after operations and in intensive care.

In August, the IHI released the scores awarded to the hospitals taking part in the initiative. Musgrove Park Hospital is the top scoring of the participating hospitals, showing that Musgrove Park is succeeding in its drive to deliver even safer and more reliable care to its patients.

The Institute of Health Improvement said, "The work you (Musgrove Park) have accomplished is truly remarkable and you are to be commended...congratulations."

Greg Dix, Musgrove's Deputy Director of Professional Practice & Clinical Care and one of the hospital's SPI Project Leads said, "Providing safe and reliable care to our patients has always been a top priority at Musgrove Park and being named as the top performing hospital in the Safer Patient Initiative project is something that we can be very proud of. It is a tremendous achievement and I would like to thank all those involved for continually driving this project forward."
