McGraw-Hill Medical received high honours from the British Medical Association at the 2008 BMA Medical Book Competition awards ceremony on Tuesday, September 9th. Six McGraw-Hill Medical titles and three medical books from McGraw-Hill Australia were 'Highly Commended' by the BMA, publisher of the renowned British Medical Journal (BMJ).

All Highly Commended titles were automatically short-listed for their category First Prizes, which were presented by Sir Charles George, Chairman of the BMA Board of Science, and honoured guest Richard Dawkins, evolutionary biologist and bestselling author of The God Delusion and The Selfish Gene. Not all categories had a First Prize winner, reflecting the BMA's pledge to maintain the highest standards of evaluation.

McGraw-Hill's inclusion in the list of nominees reflects the commitment to quality and dedication of its Editorial team. Its nine short-listed titles spanned eight different subject areas, including Anaesthesia for which McGraw-Hill has a particularly strong record of success: In 2006, they collected the category's top prize for Principles of Critical Care, 3rd Edition, and again in 2007 for Syndromes: Rapid Recognition and Perioperative Implications. This year the Textbook of Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management was 'Highly Commended' and received this brilliant endorsement by the BMA reviewer who evaluated the book:

"If you were going to buy one regional anaesthesia textbook in a lifetime, this would be it! Dr Hadzic and colleagues have produced a fundamental and essential work."

About the BMA Medical Book Competition

The BMA Medical Book competition has been conducted annually since 1994 by the BMA's Board of Science and administered by the BMA Library. It aims to encourage and reward excellence in medical publishing and patient information. All entries are reviewed by physicians and educators who are asked to consider accuracy, currency, originality, book production quality, and whether the title meets the needs of its audience. In 2008, the competition received 640 book submissions in 26 categories. 63 titles were Highly Commended and 23 first place prizes were awarded in total.
