Responding to the announcement that ImmunoBiology (ImmBio) is developing a new approach to vaccines, with successful progress to date for a vaccine to protect against the serogroup B cause of meningitis, Sue Davie, Chief Executive at the Meningitis Trust, says:
"The Meningitis Trust is delighted to hear that ImmBio's development of a new Heat shock protein Complex approach to vaccines is proving successful to date, with promising signs for a vaccine to protect against meningococcal group B in the future. There is currently no vaccine to protect against the B strain of the disease, so this news is very encouraging.
We fully support any advances in safe and effective vaccines that may help protect against meningitis, as we see first-hand how devastating the disease can be. Every day we see people who are struggling to cope with the impact of meningitis, and anything that may prevent this suffering is supported by us.
In the absence of a vaccine against all strains of the disease, we would urge people to remain vigilant of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and to trust their instincts. There will always be meningitis in some form and there will always be people struggling to cope with its after-effects. The Meningitis Trust is dedicated to providing lifelong practical, emotional and financial support to anyone living with the impact of meningitis".
