Free skin cancer screenings and health education will be offered to both professional golfers and to the public attending the 2008 Navistar LPGA Golf Classic at Capitol Hill in Prattville Sept. 26-28.

The Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Program of the Alabama Department of Public Health, the Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition, the American Academy of Dermatology, and the Women's Dermatologic Society want to emphasize the seriousness of skin cancer during the event.

Dr. Sarah Lauren C. Hughey, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at UAB and member of the Women's Dermatologic Society, will provide free skin cancer screenings for professional golfers.

During the tournament, dermatologists will be present at the health department tent, providing free skin cancer screenings or answering questions about the dangers of excessive sun exposure and the importance of using sunscreen.

Public health staff and community volunteers will be present Friday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 28, distributing skin cancer awareness and sun safety literature, free golf tees, and sunscreen to spectators.

Dermatologists will be available as follows:

- Saturday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m.-noon, Dr. Mark D. Herron of Montgomery 1-3 p.m., Dr. John L. Anthony and Dr. Lacy Thomas, both of Montgomery

- Sunday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m.-noon, Dr. Conway C. Huang, associate professor of dermatology, University of Alabama Birmingham
