Critical innovations and basic cancer biology knowledge have merged in recent years to make it possible for researchers to target specific molecules involved in critical chemical pathways of cancerous cells. Based in Philadelphia, the American Association for Cancer Research leads the way in this research and Philadelphia-based institutions play a key role.
As part of its third International Conference on Molecular Diagnostics in Cancer Therapeutic Development, the AACR will host a media roundtable, "Molecular Diagnostics: Leading the World from Philadelphia," featuring three prominent area researchers.
- Scott Waldman, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at Jefferson University Hospital, will present new data on molecular targets for gastrointestinal malignancies.
- Christina Coughlin, M.D., Ph.D., medical director and global medical monitor for Clinical Research and Development at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, will present data on a new marker for treatment resistance in breast cancer.
- Chunseng Li, Ph.D., a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, will present data on a new diagnostic marker for ovarian cancer.
- Gordon B. Mills, MD, chairman of the Department of Molecular Therapeutics at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
