Severe Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a serious, potentially life-threatening infection that appears to be increasing in incidence across the United States. Severe CDI is frequently accompanied by serious conditions such as hypotension, ileus, toxic megacolon, and perforation. While treatment with vancomycin can be effective, severe CDI often requires total colectomy. It is crucial that healthcare providers who treat patients with CDI be aware of the most effective treatment strategies for this dangerous disease.

To address the need for current education on CDI, Robert Michael Educational Institute LLC (RMEI) and Postgraduate Institute for Medicine (PIM) are jointly sponsoring a complimentary continuing medical education newsletter series titled Current Concepts in Clostridium difficile Infection. The second issue of this three-part newsletter series has just been released and is titled Current Concepts in Clostridium difficile Infection: A Focus on Severe Disease. This issue is designed to assist primary care physicians in the management of severe CDI. This newsletter series is supported by an educational grant from ViroPharma Incorporated.

The expert faculty for this continuing medical education activity include Ciaran P. Kelly, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Director of Gastroenterology Fellowship Training and Chief, Herman L. Blumgart Internal Medicine Firm at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts; and Vivian G. Loo, MD, MSc, FRCPC, Associate Professor of Medicine at McGill University and Chief of the Department of Microbiology at McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Healthcare professionals can download or order online Current Concepts in Clostridium difficile Infection: A Focus on Recurrent Disease and Current Concepts in Clostridium difficile Infection: A Focus on Severe Disease, the first two issues of this three-part newsletter series, by visiting: http://www.RMEI.com/CDInewsletters.
