On October 14th, in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the World Health Organization (WHO) will release its annual World Health Report, which this year is entitled "Primary Health Care - Now more than ever" The launch of the report will take place at a conference marking the 30th anniversary of primary health care founding document, the Alma-Ata Declaration. (Alma-Ata was renamed Almaty).
Primary health care was put forward thirty years ago as a set of values, principles and approaches aimed at raising the level of health in deprived populations. In all countries, it offered a way to improve fairness in access to health care and efficiency in the way resources were used. Primary health care embraced a view of health that went well beyond a narrow medical model by drawing upon community participation and striving for equity in access to health services and more.
With the publication of the report on 14 October, WHO hopes to start a global conversation on the effectiveness of primary health care as a way of reorienting national health systems.
