The Florida Department Of Health Recognizes October As American Pharmacists Month

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) joins the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in recognizing October as American Pharmacist's Month. The theme for this observance is Know Your Medicine; Know Your Pharmacist. Pharmacists are key health care professionals who help people achieve the best results from their medications.

"Taking your medications as prescribed by your doctor is the best way to ensure a healthy outcome and to avoid unnecessary health costs," said Florida Board of Pharmacy Executive Director Rebecca Poston, R.Ph., C.Ph.

Because Americans constantly receive messages, advertisements and emails about medications to alleviate their diseases, aches and pains, your pharmacist can help you make the most informed decision about medications. Pharmacists are very accessible and provide a wealth of reliable health information to Floridians.

Consumers are reminded to follow the 3 "R's" of Medicine Cabinet Safety:

- Read the labels; check dosing instructions and expiration dates.
- Remove expired medicines.
- Restock those items essential to meeting the health needs of everyone in the home.

Questions you should ask your pharmacist to learn more about your prescribed medications:

1. What is the name of the medication and what is it supposed to do?
2. When and how do I take the medication?
3. How long should I take the medication?
4. Does this medication contain anything that can cause an allergic reaction?
5. Should I avoid alcohol, any other medicines, food and/or activities?
6. Should I expect any side effects?
7. What if I forget to take my medications?
8. Is it safe to become pregnant or to breast-feed while taking this medication?
9. Is there a generic version of the medication that my physician has prescribed that may be more affordable?
10. How should I store my medications?
