UroToday.com - This article, a basic science study out of Turkey, investigated the histopathologic changes in the ureter wall in an experimental urinary bladder hypoplasia and agenesis model. The group utilized timed pregnant rats, randomly divided into three groups, that received intraperitoneal Adriamycin at 2 mg/kg on gestational days 6 to 9 or saline at 2 mL/kg on GD 6 to 9. The third group did not receive any medication during their pregnancies. Fetuses were harvested near term on GD 21, dissected under a microscope, and examined for urinary system abnormalities.

In the first group, they found that the diameter of the ureter lumen was significantly increased, but wall thickness, tunica muscularis, and epithelial thickness of the ureters were decreased as compared with those in the second and control groups.

The study group concluded that the diameters of the ureteral lumen and wall thickness of the ureters were increased following obstructive uropathy, after birth. The most important aspect of this finding will be the signaling pathway as different modalities of intervention that could be done early on could probably save long-term damage to the urinary system for primary outlet obstruction.
