Indiana institutions, companies and individuals with a common interest in cancer research, diagnosis and treatment will gather at a cancer/oncology summit Dec. 1-2 at the University Place Conference Center, IUPUI, in Indianapolis.

"Emerging Trends and New Developments in Cancer Discovery, Diagnosis and Treatment" is the third in a series of summits examining Indiana's life sciences research strengths in cancer.

"The event will provide a unique combination of presentations, panel discussions and networking opportunities for scientists, clinicians and supporting institutions and private corporations," said conference co-chairman Mark R. Kelley, Ph.D., associate director of the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research and associate director for the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center.

"And we hope the format of the meeting will stimulate new interactions, connections and collaborations among all of us in Indiana working in oncology," he said.

"We are developing a better understanding of the cancer care system and building and strengthening the climate for translational research in Indiana," said Dan Peterson, conference co-chair and vice president of industry and government affairs at Cook Medical.

Keynote speakers are Eric K. Rowinsky, M.D., chief medical officer, and executive vice president of ImClone Systems, Inc., and Douglas W. Blayney, M.D., medical director, University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, and president-elect of American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Companies, organizations or universities that have developed unique approaches or support for cancer detection or treatment are invited to submit abstracts of their work of no more than 250 words to be considered for the poster review. Abstracts that are selected will be notified by Nov. 14 and have their posters on display during the summit. To submit abstracts or register for the summit, go online to http://www.IHIF.org. The event is sponsored by the Indiana University School of Medicine, Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center and other supporting universities, hospitals and corporations.
