STUTTGART, GERMANY (UroToday.com) - The value of PCA3 in urine was investigated in a prospective European trial on 463 patients who had previously undergone one or two negative prostate biopsies and who were scheduled for a re-biopsy of their prostate.

In 128 patients prostate cancer was found on re-biopsy. The area under the curve was 0.658 for PCA3 compared to 0.578 for free PSA. With a sensitivity set at 80%, the specificity for PCA3 and free PSA were 43% and 27%, respectively. The area under the curve for PCA3 was independent from the number of previous biopsies. However, patients with a Gleason score < 7 or patients with T1c tumors (versus T2) or patients with clinically insignificant prostate cancer following Epstein criteria had lower PCA3-scores.

The authors concluded that their results on PCA3 improve the ability to indicate a re-biopsy in case of negative previous biopsy(ies).
