STUTTGART, GERMANY (UroToday.com) - Interobserver variability of urine cytology was investigated by members of the working group "Urine Cytology" of the DGU.

Four experienced cytologists analyzed 45 benign and 105 malignant urine specimens, respectively. Complete and good agreement was defined as same opinion of 4/4 and 3/4 cytologists, respectively. Complete agreement was obtained in 42% of all cases. Complete and good agreement, in terms of sensitivity compared to specificity, were achieved in 46% and 21% compared to 45% and 29%.

Interobserver variability for urine cytology was high. Treatment decisions based on these results seem questionable.

Abstract #V3.1

Presented by O. Hakenberg, MD, et al., at the 60th Annual Congress of the German Urological Association (DGU) - September 24 - 27, 2008 - Stuttgart, Germany
