Novice And Experienced Nurse Authors Honored By Urologic Nursing Journal At Annual Convention

Urologic Nursing journal presented its annual Writer's Awards for excellence in urologic nursing clinical scholarship at the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) 39th Annual Conference, in Philadelphia, PA, during the awards luncheon on October 5, 2008.

Joanne P. Robinson, PhD, APRN, BC; Tamara Avi-Itzhak, DSc; and Ruth McCorkle, PhD, RN, FAAN, received the 2007-2008 Urologic Nursing Catherine-Ann Lawrence Literary Excellence Award for previously published authors. In their article, the authors reported the reliability, validity and sensitivity of tools that measure the impact of lower urinary tract symptoms on men's quality of life after radical prostatectomy. The article "Psychometric Properties of the Male Urogenital Distress Inventory (MUDI) and Male Urinary Symptom Impact Questionnaire (MUSIQ) in Patients Following Radical Prostatectomy" was published in the December 2007 issue of Urologic Nursing.

Robinson is a professor in the department of nursing, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Camden, NJ. Avi-Itzhak is an associate professor in the department of occupational therapy, York College, City University of New York, Jamaica, NY. McCorkle is the Florence S. Wald Professor of Nursing, Yale University School of Nursing, New Haven, CT.

Deborah Kuklinski, MS, RNC, WHNP; and Sumana Koduri, MD, received one of two 2007-2008 Urologic Nursing Novice Literary Excellence Awards for previously unpublished authors. Kuklinski and Koduri's article explored whether a urine dipstick test alone (without a urine culture) can predict urinary tract infections. The article "Predicting Urinary Tract Infections In a Urogynecology Population" was published in the February 2008 issue of Urologic Nursing.

Kuklinski is a women's health nurse practitioner, Urogynecology Center, and Koduri is an obstetrician/gynecologist and an assistant professor, the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI.

Jane Langemeier, MSN, RN, also received the 2007-2008 Urologic Nursing Novice Literary Excellence Award for previously unpublished authors. In her article, Langemeier presented an overview of genitourinary tuberculosis and how to effectively treat the infectious disease. The article "Tuberculosis of the Genitourinary System" was published in the August 2007 issue of Urologic Nursing.

Langemeier is a faculty member, Community Health and Nursing Research, Midland Lutheran College, Fremont, NE.
