BioTechniques, the largest circulation international journal of life science methods published by Informa Business Information - the world's leading medical and scientific publishers - has won a silver Eddie for Best Single Article in the Science category at this year's FOLIO Awards.

The 'Eddie' awards are held each year to recognize excellence in magazine editorial and winning one of the prestigious awards is one of the industry's highest accolades for journalists and editors. One hundred judges spend weeks evaluating thousands of entries in some 67 categories.

The BioTechniques article, "The Costs of Using Unauthenticated, Over-Passaged Cell Lines: How Much More Data Do We Need?", was published in November 2007 and competed among nearly 3000 articles to win the silver prize at the awards which were announced in Chicago on September 23.

"Our article focused on the fact that - based on submissions to major cell repositories in the last decade - it is estimated that between 18% and 36% of cell lines may be contaminated or misidentified," says Peyton Hughes, author of the article in BioTechniques. "The cross contamination, misidentified cell lines and the use of cultures at high-passage levels contributes to the generation of erroneous and misleading results as well as wasted research funds."

"We are delighted that our article won the Silver award," says Hughes. "It is an honor to have our work recognized by such a well-regarded group of judges."
