An internationally recognized scientist whose work has shed light on how the body's immune system functions will be the recipient of the Indiana University School of Medicine's prestigious 2008 Steven C. Beering Award.

Charles A. Dinarello, M.D., a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, studies small proteins that play a role in the body's ability to fight disease. His research has answered such questions such as how does inflammation in the body cause a fever, and how does the body's inflammatory action affect the onset of lupus, type 2 diabetes and other autoimmune disorders?

Dr. Dinarello will be honored during convocation at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 29 at the Riley Outpatient Center auditorium on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. He will be on the medical center campus for two days lecturing and visiting with students, faculty and staff.

Dr. Dinarello is an associate member of the European Molecular Biology Organization and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
