General Dental Council Renews Partnership On Specialist Training
Main Category: DentistryArticle Date: 29 Oct 2008 - 4:00 PDT
The General Dental Council (GDC) has entered a new specialist training partnership with the Joint Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry (JCSTD).
The GDC's 13 Specialist Lists identify those dentists who have completed specialist training and are entitled to use the title 'specialist'. The JCSTD facilitates nation-wide coherence and consistency in the provision of high quality training in the 13 specialties recognised by the GDC by bringing together key stakeholders, such as COPDEND (the Committee of Postgraduate Deans and Directors) and the Dental Faculties of the Royal Surgical Colleges, involved in specialist training.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations clarifies the respective roles and responsibilities of the GDC and the members of the JCSTD and is vital in ensuring that specialist training continues to meet the GDC's standards for specialist listing.
Notes:
1. The Memorandum of Understanding between the JCSTD and the GDC and is available from the GDC's website.
2. The bodies represented on the JCSTD include:
-- COPDEND - the Committee of Postgraduate Deans and Directors (UK);
-- the Dental Faculties of the Royal Surgical Colleges;
-- the Dental Schools Council (DSC, formerly the Council of Heads and Deans of Dental Schools (CHDDS));
-- the Specialist Advisory Committees (SACs) of the JCSTD, which include relevant specialist societies and associations.
