Barts and The London NHS Trust and School of Medicine and Dentistry, is welcoming visitors for a 'Pathology Open Afternoon' to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding pathology, the hidden science at the heart of modern medicine.

On Wednesday afternoon, 5 November, visitors to the recently completed, state-of-the-art, Pathology and Pharmacy Building at The Royal London Hospital will have an opportunity to find out how pathologists diagnose common life-threatening disease. The event is being held as part of the Royal College of Pathologists' National Pathology Week, which aims to highlight pathology's impact on the health of the population.

Professor Rino Cerio, Dermatopathologist and Clinical Academic Head of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, Barts and The London NHS Trust said: "The aim of this day is to show people how pathology is not just autopsies on dead bodies but it is valuable in identifying life-threatening disease".

Visitors will have the opportunity to hear learn about what happens to your appendix after the operation? Why have a cervical smear or vaccination? The effect of smoking on your lungs, the dangers of infection and how can this be prevented? The exhibition includes microbiology, haematology, immunology, infection control and pathological specimens.

Groups will be guided through a 40 minute tour. Visitors will then have the opportunity to ask questions of Trust medical and scientific staff.
