Runners Get Personal On World Run Day - USA Event Inspires Donations To 1000+ Charities
Main Category: Sports Medicine / FitnessArticle Date: 30 Oct 2008 - 6:00 PDT
Fitness runners, scattered across hundreds of US cites, can help celebrate World Run Day in "their own way" this November 9th. For the event, each runner decides where they'll run and what charity they'll donate to. Already, over 1200 runners in the USA have registered for the event. Their course starting points, starting times, and charity information are all listed at the event site http://www.runday.com for others to browse.
Whether on roads, trails, beaches, or even treadmills, every runner can participate. All runners who are registered for the event prior to November 10th are rewarded with a colorful World Run Day 2008 event t-shirt - mailed free of charge.
Groups of runners, representing their own cities, have also emerged. The groups consist of corporations, school children or passionate runners inspired by the event's run-for-charity theme. Each are looking to "make a difference through running" explains Bill McDermott, a lifelong runner from Long Beach, NY, who founded the event in 1999. "Running has served as a fundraiser for countless events, and with times like these, we certainly need an international day of running and an international day of charity for both runners and charity to stay fit," he explains.
Since its inception in 1999, more than 1000 separate charities have benefited from the World Run Day event. Each year, in addition to promoting the health benefits of running, it provides a venue for runners to donate any amount to their favorite charity. USA Runners are encouraged to register on-line for the event ($17.99) before event day.
