ISSCR Highlights New YouTube Channel Providing Accurate Scientific Perspectives On Stem Cell Research

The University of Michigan launched a new channel on http://www.youtube.com this week to highlight and share advances in stem cell science. This educational effort is supported by the University's stem cell research programs and commended by the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR).

With additional stem cell research and trials, stem cells have the potential to improve the lives of millions of patients suffering from a wide range of conditions and diseases, including Parkinson's, diabetes and spinal cord injury. The University of Michigan has an extensive stem cell research program led by the Center for Stem Cell Biology and members of the ISSCR.

University researchers created the YouTube channel to communicate facts about stem cell research and to address misunderstandings that surround research, especially embryonic stem cell research. The videos connect viewers to the researchers behind the science. Researchers share the intricacies of their work, including where stem cells come from, how the cells function and the importance of ethical protections and support for research efforts.

The timing of this channel comes during a heightened period of interest concerning stem cell research in Michigan. On Tuesday, voters will be asked to support Michigan's Proposal 2, a state initiative to accelerate medical research and develop new stem cell treatments for currently incurable diseases.

The ISSCR encourages patients, future patients, friends and family to visit the YouTube site to learn more about stem cell research.
