MONTEREY, CA, USA (UroToday.com) - The Pelvic Floor Medicine session of the Western Section American Urological Association (WSAUA) opened with a State-of-the-Art lecture by Dr. Rodney Appell. Dr. Appell spoke about his experience with radiofrequency therapy of the proximal urethra/bladder neck (PU/BN) for nonsurgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Cystoscopy is considered unnecessary with this technique and was not performed.

Patients tolerated the procedure under local anesthesia, in the office. The device is placed into the bladder to deliver radiofrequency energy to circumferentially denature the collagen at the PU/BN. At intermediate term follow up, approximately half of the patients overall reported significant improvement in their SUI, with 75% of patients with mild baseline SUI reporting the same. Complications have been minimal in available preliminary reports. Longer follow up is currently underway.

Presented by Rodney Appell, MD, at the 84th Annual Meeting of the AUA - Western Section - October 26 - 30, 2008 - Monterey, California

Reported by Alvaro Lucioni, MD, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, WA.
