Bradford-based hearing specialist, Lisa Binns-Smith, really listens to people. In fact, her patients are so impressed with her expertise and dedication to their hearing healthcare, they have now helped to crown her Rayovac and Audio Infos* 'UK Audiologist of the Year' - the first ever recipient of the award.

Lisa was nominated after the judging committee asked patients to nominate the hearing aid dispenser or audiologist who they felt had gone the extra mile to provide them with outstanding service.

After a nine-month process, whittling down the entries from hundreds of nominations from all over the country, Lisa, who works at Binns Hearing Healthcare in Apperley Bridge, came out the clear winner.

Dedicated to Patients

The judging panel was hugely impressed by Lisa's dedication to her patients' needs - clearly evident from the nomination she received from her patient, Dawn King.

Dawn, who works locally as a nurse practitioner, credits Lisa with transforming her professional and social life by painstakingly identifying and fitting hearing devices that work effectively with her stethoscope - enabling her to carry out her medical duties.

Lisa Binns-Smith commented:

"Being named 'Audiologist of the Year' is a great honour of course, but being able to help people like Dawn with their hearing is a huge reward in itself. There is nothing that I would rather do!

"It was a huge surprise to find I'd won because I didn't even know I had been nominated! But it's lovely to find that you are truly appreciated. I see many lovely clients and feel privileged to be able to help them.

"Technology has moved on so much that we are now able to help many more people with specific needs - just like Dawn."

Lisa is no stranger to winning. Prior to joining her father, Eddie Binns, as a registered hearing aid dispenser, she spent several years working in her local NHS Audiology Department and, in 1997, was awarded "Student of the Year for the North West" by the British Association of Audiology Technicians.

As UK Audiologist of the Year, Lisa received a €1,000 prize, along with a signed, framed certificate and a trophy. She has also been put forward as the UK nomination for the European Audiologist of the Year.

An Audiologist identifies hearing and balance problems and suggests ways to manage them.

*Rayovac is a leading hearing aid battery manufacturer. Audio Infos is a magazine for hearing professionals.
