According to NICE, over 700,000 people in the UK are so overweight they need gastric band surgery. In response to the UK's growing obesity epidemic, the BMI McIndoe Surgical Centre, the UK's largest specialist unit dedicated to cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, has purchased the first operating table in Europe capable of holding patients up to 330kg (51 stone).
"We have recently carried out a number of body lifts to remove excess skin from patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and have noticed an increasing number of patients contacting us about bariatric surgery such as gastric bands. We took the decision to invest in the new operating table to meet the demands of a developing patient group." commented David Irvine, Executive Director of the McIndoe Surgical Centre.
The new state-of-the-art Image 777 operating table from Samarit Medical (UK) Ltd has just been installed into one of McIndoe's theatres where is has replaced the current table which was capable of holding a maximum of 23 stone. The unique table, which is fabricated from carbon fibre, has a centre of gravity at the base of the table as opposed to the centre to allow it to safely hold larger weights. The surface of the table is made from a sheet of carbon fibre weave which aside from its load bearing strength, results in less x-ray image scatter than standard table materials. This means surgeons are able to use imaging equipment over the operating table without having to move patients mid-operation, which lessens the risk of infection.
"The new table will allow to treat larger patients requiring cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, who we have previously had to turn away." commented David Irvine, Executive Director of the McIndoe Surgical Centre.
