Dr Alexis Willett from Breakthrough Breast Cancer says:
"This research puts forward an interesting theory about breast cancer development. However, it is not currently possible to predict whether early changes picked up by breast screening will progress so treatment is usually offered to prevent breast cancer developing.
"We know that the NHS Breast Screening Programme saves lives by detecting cancer at an early stage, as prompt diagnosis offers the best chance of successful treatment. Breakthrough encourages all women over 50 to attend breast screening every three years."
