Biotech is reclaiming its buzzword status once again, and Citeline authors Christine Blazynski and Tracy DeGregorio look at the top 20 biotech companies in the December issue of GCPj and find significant disparity between the top five companies and the rest of the set. In fact, the top three companies, Genentech, Amgen and Celgene cumulatively account for 50% of the total number of ongoing trials for this set of 20 companies.

According to author Christine Blazynski, "When we pulled together the list of the top 20 biotechs, determined by ongoing trial activity, we noticed the huge differences in ongoing trials counts, even between the top five where the number one company, Genentech, is conducting twice as many trials as Amgen, and four times as many trials as the fifth company, Biogen Idec. When we looked at the top biotechs by therapeutic area, it was noteworthy that for every therapeutic area the company in the number one position is leading by a wide margin - in most cases running at least twice the number of trials as the number two company."

This article also looks at ongoing trials activity by therapeutic area and finds, not surprisingly, that oncology accounts for 65% of the total ongoing trials being conducted by this set of 20 companies. Says co-author DeGregorio, "Autoimmune/inflammation and oncology are dominated by a very similar list of companies. But for the other therapeutic areas, the top five company list is more diverse, indicative of the potential for niche biotechs to enter a leader position."

This report also looks in more detail at oncology trials activity, with attention to tumor type and co-sponsorship arrangements.

Notes

The report, "Boom Time for Biotech?" is part of a monthly series of Expert Analysis reports published in GCPj. These reports are based on the TrialTrove data set, the most comprehensive source for clinical trials intelligence, which now comprises over 80,000 clinical trial records spanning 100+ diseases.
