More Action Needed To Tackle Alcohol Misuse, Says British Medical Association
Main Category: Alcohol / Addiction / Illegal DrugsArticle Date: 05 Dec 2008 - 5:00 PDT
The proposals to crack down on irresponsible drinking are positive but more action is needed say doctors' leaders in response to details released following the Queen's Speech. Dr Vivienne Nathanson, BMA Head of Science and Ethics, said:
"In our recent report on the misuse of alcohol, the BMA called for the introduction of many of the measures announced today so we're very pleased the Government has listened to us. The BMA believes that if the Government is serious about tackling the UK binge drinking culture, even tougher action will be necessary. The evidence demonstrates that in order to address the major drivers of alcohol consumption governments need to focus on price and availability. Today's proposals will only scratch the surface.
"The BMA also wants the government to do more to tackle the health aspects of alcohol misuse. Drinking too much alcohol is related to over 60 medical conditions including heart and liver disease, diabetes, strokes and mental health problems."
