People aged 65-plus are expected to make up almost a quarter of the UK population by 2032, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said today.

There were 9.5 million over-65s in the UK in 2007 compared with 8.5 million in 1982, a rise of 16%. The figure is projected to rise to 16.1 million by 2032, 23% of the estimated 71 million population.

Age is the biggest risk factor for dementia. One in three people over the age of 65 die with this devastating condition. If a quarter of the population will be over 65 by 2032 we must tackle dementia now to ensure people receive an accurate diagnosis, early intervention and good quality care. The forthcoming national dementia strategy for England must bring wide sweeping change to drag dementia care out of the dark ages.
