Health experts from the Association of British Hujjaj (Pilgrims) UK (A.B.H) are urging all returnee pilgrims and their families to be aware of the symptoms of meningitis and know what to do if this disease is suspected. The quicker it is diagnosed and treated, the better the chances are for a good recovery.
Millions of people from all over the world, including those from the Meningitis belt countries converged upon Makkah, Saudi Arabia during Hajj. Due to the crowded conditions at ceremonies, accommodation sites and on public transport, pilgrims were at extra risk of contracting infectious diseases such as Meningitis and Hepatitis etc.
This disease often starts with flu-like symptoms - fever, vomiting, cold hands and feet, shivering and limb, joint and muscle pain. Severe headaches, stiff neck and dislike of bright lights may also be present as well as a rash which could appear anywhere on the body.
"Meningitis is a well known notorious killer disease. It is highly infectious and rapidly spreads from one person to another. The mortality rate is very high and those few who manage to survive through most intensive hospital treatment often end up with all the miserable sequelae like damage to the brain, kidneys, lungs and the limbs etc. Sadly, their quality of life is very poor indeed… In recent years, over 20 British pilgrims have lost their lives due to meningitis outbreak", said health experts in their joint statement.
Health experts are also reminding the returnee pilgrims that if they have suffered any ailment during the Hajj then they must visit their GP and seek medical assistance to ensure to eliminate the risk of the spread of any infectious disease amongst their families and the community.
