British Dental Association Welcomes Recognition Of Excellence In UK Dental Research

The British Dental Association (BDA) has welcomed the recognition of the excellence of research at UK dental schools. The findings of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirm the high standard of dental research in the UK, with all fourteen institutions whose staff were subject to the assessment recognised for the world-leading originality, significance and rigour of their work.
The Exercise found that at least 90 per cent of staff at each of the institutions assessed were undertaking research of an international standard. No research activity at any of the institutions fell below the standard required to be recognised nationally.
Dr Ross Hobson, Chair of the BDA's Central Committee for Dental Academic Staff, said:
"Today's results confirm the excellence of the research that is being carried out by the UK's dental schools, with the international excellence of their work enjoying just recognition.
"What makes this success even more remarkable is that it has been achieved against a background of pressures on dental academic staff from a 25 per cent increase in student numbers and the opening of a number of new institutions."
The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise are available here.
The British Dental Association (BDA) is the professional association for dentists in the UK. It represents 23,000 dentists working in general practice, in community and hospital settings, in academia and research, and in the armed forces, and includes dental students.
