Newton resident Linda Heffner, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) was recently named one of America's Top Doctors by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.
The America's Top Doctors guide, recognized by consumers seeking high-quality medical care, is a trusted and authoritative resource for identifying top doctors in the United States. The selected top doctors are nominated by hospital presidents; vice presidents of medical affairs; and chiefs of service in anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology, medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology and surgery; as well as randomly selected board-certified physicians.
Heffner is a maternal-fetal medicine (high risk obstetrics) specialist with a special interest in pregnancy outcomes in older women. She joined BMC in 2003, after serving for nearly a decade as director of maternal-fetal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She was actively involved in the teaching programs at Harvard Medical School where she was a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology.
Heffner, who received her PhD from Cornell University and her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, did her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and a clinical fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Heffner serves on the editorial boards of Reproductive Sciences and Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is the immediate past president of the Obstetrical Society of Boston. Heffner is also the recipient of the 2004 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics for her role in medical student teaching at BUSM.
