Following a period of consultation the NMC will publish its guidance for the care of older people in February 2009.

The guidance is intended to make a positive difference to the way that older people are cared for in all care settings by promoting individuality, dignity, independence and choice.

Around 300 people including nurses, carers and older people took part in a series of focus groups that were held around the UK in October 2008.

Participants were asked to consider

- whether the guidance was easy to understand
- whether it could promote dignity in care in the workplace and
- whether there were considerations to be added.

The guidance was discussed, and received unanimous approval, at the final meeting of the NMC's current Council which took place on 3rd December 2008.

Reports on the series of focus groups and a report from a separate discussion group that was held with elderly service users are available to download.

The guidance is expected to be published in February 2009 and will be available to download from here.

A version for the public will also be developed, with the intention of being made available in various community settings.

Next steps

We will now work to find ways of embedding the guidance in the workplace.
