Registration is open for the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) 2009 Annual Convention and Preconvention Program to be held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City, New York, Thursday through Sunday, April 2-5, 2009.

Initial registration numbers indicate that 2009 will prove to be better attended than the 2007 meeting at this same location, regarded as the AIUM's most successful convention in history. During the 4-day meeting, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the latest research in medical ultrasound, connect with colleagues from around the world, enhance their professional skills, and view the newest advancements in ultrasound technology while earning up to 33.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (accepted by the ARDMS) or ARRT Category A Credits

The AIUM has added several new features to the 2009 convention. Special Focus Sessions will provide extensive coverage on (1) professional liability and (2) the path toward becoming an advanced sonographic practitioner. Quick Take Sessions are designed for people who want to present ultrasound-related topics in a relaxed setting that offers ample opportunity for interaction with a small audience - perfect for early observation and puzzling case series.

In addition, the opportunities for colleagues to connect and collaborate before, during, and after the actual convention have expanded with the launch of the AIUM's social networking site: www.aium2009.org. The site features blogs, forums, groups, video, pictures, and announcements relating to the AIUM convention. During the convention, blogs will be posted by attendees and pictures will be uploaded as the events unfold.

A multitude of sessions in various ultrasound specialty areas will be offered throughout the convention. Participants may choose from numerous course formats, including categorical courses, scientific sessions, Meet-the-Professor sessions, Just Images sessions, and Film Panel sessions. Several hands-on scanning sessions, which are favorites among attendees, will be offered in peripheral nerve ultrasound, elastography, and ultrasound-guided biopsies and intervention.

The 2009 Preconvention Program will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2009, and will feature 3 full-day courses: (1) Doppler Ultrasound in Obstetrics: Basic and Advanced; (2) The Future Is Here: New Horizons in Ultrasound; and (3) Ultrasound Present and Future: Emerging Markets and New Technologies. Four half-day preconvention courses will also be offered: (1) Basic Techniques: Real-time Demonstration of Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound in Daily Practice; (2) Guided Tour of the Fetal Heart: Step by Step; (3) Doppler Critical Care Ultrasound: Current Applications and Future Challenges; and (4) Recognizing Ovarian Cancer and How to Screen for It.

To register for the 2009 AIUM Annual Convention and Preconvention Program and for a detailed description of courses, visit the AIUM website at http://www.aium.org/, or contact the AIUM Professional Development Department, 14750 Sweitzer Ln, Suite 100, Laurel, MD 20707-5906 USA. Early registration is encouraged to take advantage of discounted registration rates and special hotel rates.

The AIUM is a multidisciplinary association dedicated to advancing the safe and effective use of ultrasound in medicine through professional and public education, research, development of guidelines, and accreditation.
