Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ) Accepted For Indexing By The National Library Of Medicine (NLM)

Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ), an official peer-reviewed publication of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), has been accepted for indexing by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in MEDLINE/PubMed (http://www.pubmed.gov), the world's most widely accessed medical database. MEDLINE is the NLM's premier bibliographic database containing references to journal articles from 1950 to the present in the life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine. PubMed is a searchable database that includes over 18 million citations and abstracts from MEDLINE and other life science journals. It includes links to full text articles and other related resources.

"Only a small percentage of journals that apply for indexing each year are approved by the NLM, and most are research journals. This achievement reflects worldwide recognition of the clinical and scientific importance of aesthetic plastic surgery as well as the quality of the Journal's content," says Editor in Chief Foad Nahai, MD, Clinical Professor of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine.

The NLM journal selection process includes close examination of all aspects of submitted journals including the importance, quality and scope of content; expertise and qualifications of the Editorial Board; conformity of the editorial process with currently accepted standards for scholarly journals; and production quality. Indexing comes at a pivotal time in the journal's history - the retirement of Stanley A. Klatsky, MD after 11 years as editor in chief. This achievement reflects his initiative to make the necessary changes over the years to ensure that ASJ became indexed by NLM. In his farewell editorial in the November/December 2008 issue of ASJ, he states, "Our indexed status can certainly be viewed as a breakthrough in making important information about aesthetic surgery easily accessible to clinicians and researchers around the world." He goes on to thank everyone who contributed to the journal's success over the years and to pass on the legacy to Dr. Foad Nahai, the new editor in chief starting in January 2009.

"Already the most widely read journal in the field of cosmetic surgery, ASJ will now be even more broadly available to clinicians and researchers around the world," says Dr. Nahai.
