After the seventh baby, baby G, was delivered "flawlessly" at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Bellflower, California, at 10.47 am on Monday 26 January, everybody thought that was it: but then, Dr Alejandro Vasquez, one of the medical team said, "Wait a minute, I think I feel a hand", and one minute later, an eighth baby, a boy identified as baby H, was delivered.
A press release said that preliminary research shows this is only the second set of octuplets ever to be born in the United States. The hospital did not reveal any names or personal details, or say whether the mother had received fertility treatment. All 8 babies were delivered by cesarean section.
While delighted, the medical team were taken by surprise: it would appear that baby H "had been hiding from the ultrasound".
The team of 46 had practised several "dry runs" to prepare for the safe delivery of what was anticipated to be seven infants. The last dry run was minutes before the real delivery started. Altogether four operating rooms were used for the delivery and care of the infants, and there were no unexpected hitches in the "hand-off" from the delivery team to the care team.
The first baby, a boy weighing 2 pounds 11 ounces (1.22 kilos), was delivered at 10.43 am. Altogether, six boys and two girls were delivered, the largest weighing 3 pounds 4 ounces (1.47 kilos) and the smallest, a boy, the fifth to be born at 10.46 am, weighed 1 pound 8 ounces (0.68 kilos).
Each baby cried spontaneously, said the doctors, which is always a good sign.
Dr Mandhir Gupta told CNN at a news conference on Monday evening that the babies could be in incubators for about six to eight weeks and in the hospital for 10 weeks. They were delivered about 9 weeks before term.
He said the mother was doing well and she was "very excited" about the babies, who are "looking good so far".
The hospital statement said the first 72 hours were expected to be the most critical.
According to the Associated Press, the world's first live-born octuplets were born in Houston, Texas, in 1998.
One of the babies died about one week later, but the surviving siblings, 5 girls and 2 boys, celebrated their 10th birthday in December. Their mother, Nigerian-born Nkem Chukwu, wished the new family well, "we'll keep praying for them", she told the AP, and had this message for the parents:
"Just enjoy it. It's a blessing, truly a blessing."

Octupelets Critics, What About John/kate + 8?
posted by p on 6 Feb 2009 at 8:03 amQuestion: The lady on TLC who has twins then sextuplets, all via in-vitro, why wasn't she being criticized about having 6 babies at one time? There were no negative stories about here. 6 and 8 babies, same thing. It was said by several news show "in-vitro" experts, they would never put more than 2 embryos, except in rare cases, into a mother, to prevent these multiple births. Well, Jon and Kate Plus 8, seems that rule wasn't applied to Kate and nor was she rail roaded the way this lady is.
Keep On Loving Your Children
posted by tywanda on 13 Feb 2009 at 10:00 pmI feel that as long as this woman loves her children and they are happy and well taken care of leave her alone, so what if she need assistance I say state, government give it to her, she loves her children an needs and reward for that, there are many adopting and for the money and not caring for the children, it is because she is single well she didn't sleep around and get them. Jon and Kate leave them alone also they are parents that care and love their children, I believe this young lady is being put under fire because she has no husband, this I want to say Jesus can do all things and there is and man for every one that is willing to be and father and a husband to her. I am sitting here looking at her on TV trying to explain to strangers about why she does it. She owe you nothing children are and blessing ,if you want to do anything build her and home donate pampers and milk, clothing, etc.
Loving Your Children, Loving Other People's Children
posted by Janice Springer on 14 Feb 2009 at 6:50 amTwandda has a point. However, we need to respect the views of those who do not want to subsidise other people's procreation.
A simple and more democratic solution is let those who want to, pay for the upkeep of the children - but also allow those who do not want to, to opt out.
I personally would rather have my tax money spent on helping disabled people find employment, but that is me.
I agree, continue loving your children. But, whether I want to love and sponsor other people's desire to have lots of children is a personal thing - I would like to have a say if my money is involved.
No Brainer
posted by Nancy on 17 Feb 2009 at 9:07 pmFrom what I've read in the "media", I think "Octup. Mom" is looking for a free ride - - I think the Doctor/doctors who implanted her should be up for child support payments and Dad duty, They were totally irresponsible, and should help pay for it. This is a totally different case than Jon & Kate - they are not on welfare rolls,ie., I'm not paying to help support their children, and 8 is a bit different than 14, on welfare, no Dad ! No brainer
Regarding Jon And Kate
posted by CHL on 3 Mar 2009 at 4:16 pmJon and Kate did not have invitro. She was on fertility meds due to a health problem. My sister just had IVF and the Dr. wouldn't even want to put 2 embryos in
