The number of new HIV cases in the Czech Republic reached 147 in 2008, up from 122 in 2007, Miroslav Hlavaty -- head of the House of Light, an organization for people living with HIV/AIDS -- said recently, CTK/Prague Daily Monitor reports. Ten new HIV cases were registered in December 2008 alone. The total number of people living with HIV in the Czech Republic is estimated to be about 1,000, with 80% of cases occurring among men. Hlavaty said that the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control estimates that one-fifth of people living with HIV in the Czech Republic are unaware of their status. According to data from the State Health Institute Prague and the Czech AIDS Help Society, 142 of the 265 people who have developed AIDS in the Czech Republic have died since 1986 (CTK/Prague Daily Monitor, 1/29).
