Trust's Substance Misuse In-Patient Detoxification Services Receive Excellent, UK

Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC) have received an excellent rating for its drug and alcohol inpatient detoxification service, following a joint review by the Healthcare Commission and National Treatment Agency.

SHSC delivers integrated NHS and social care mental health services for adults and older people in the city and provides learning disability and substance misuse services. It operates in partnership with Sheffield City Council's Neighbourhood and Community Care Directorate.

The Trust scored highly on a number of key areas including good access arrangements and well developed policies, interventions are in line with up to date evidence, and are pro actively reviewed and the service is delivered in a safe environment, staffed by competent practitioners.

Kevan Taylor, Chief Executive of SHSC, said: "This is fantastic news and we are delighted to have received an excellent rating. Thanks must go to the SHSC management team including John Burton, Paul Reeves, Dr Olawale Lagundoye, who led the development of this service, and to all those involved in service delivery, both from the in-patient and the community-based clinicians in substance misuse, who prepare clients for their in-patient detoxification package".

"We have worked hard to develop our inpatient detoxification service and the policies and procedures that underpin it. We will build on this to further improve the service and we are already piloting some new approaches, as we want to encourage more people to take up a detoxification package, which is often the first major step to those clients being drug free.
