American Frozen Food Institute President and CEO Kraig R. Naasz today issued the following statement following Senator Richard Durbin's introduction of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.

"I commend Senator Durbin for leading this legislative effort toward modernizing food safety standards. Senator Durbin has gone to great lengths to be inclusive of input from major stakeholders, and we appreciate the opportunity to provide insight and recommendations toward real improvement of the safety of our food supply.

"The food industry accepts primary responsibility for ensuring the safety and quality of our food supply. As such, AFFI concurs with the bill's cornerstone provision that food companies should be expected to identify potential hazards that might occur in the production and processing of their products, and that companies should determine the most effective controls for those hazards.

"Senator Durbin's bill offers real improvements to the food safety system that we all depend upon. The frozen food industry is one built on innovation and our companies understand fully the importance of providing safe food products to consumers. I look forward to continuing the positive work already begun with Senator Durbin and his staff on this legislation of such great importance to our country."
