Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, Radiologist, Medical Oncologist, & Pathologist To Lead American Society Of Breast Disease

Society Elects New Officers and 5 Board Members

Benjamin O. Anderson, Professor, University of Washington, Seattle, and founder, Breast Health Global Initiative, announced today that nine outstanding leaders in the field of breast cancer were elected to positions on the Society's Board of Directors.

Incoming President Gail Lebovic, MD, director of women's services at The Cooper Clinic, Dallas, Texas, will succeed Julio A. Ibarra, MD, medical director of pathology services, Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center. They will be joined by radiologist Stephen A. Feig, MD, director of breast imaging, University of California, Irvine, as President-Elect, and medical oncologist Robert Carlson, MD, professor, Stanford University, as Secretary-Treasurer.

Newly elected members at large are: Anees Chagpar, MD, University of Louisville; Dennis Holmes, MD, University of Southern California; Jean Lynn, RN, MPH, OCN®, National Cancer Institute; Seema A. Khan, MD, Northwestern University; Coral Quiet, MD, Arizona Breast Cancer Specialists; and Richard Reitherman, MD, Pacific Breast MRI.

Dr. Anderson noted that the Nominating Committee had identified a slate of exceptional candidates, who have a genuine interdisciplinary understanding of the needs and priorities of breast cancer and breast disease patients. All individuals take office at the end of the Society's 33rd Annual Meeting, April 2-4, 2009, at The Drake Hotel, Chicago, Illinois.

Profiles of the Newly Elected Board Members

Robert W. Carlson, MD


Robert Carlson received his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. He joined the faculty at Stanford after his fellowship and is Professor of Medicine there, as well as Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs, Division of Oncology. His primary areas of investigation include breast cancer clinical trials and the use of computer-based systems to assist health care providers in the delivery of care. Dr. Carlson is Chair of the Breast Cancer Guidelines Committee and the Breast Cancer Risk Reduction Guidelines Committee for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Anees Chagpar, MD

Dr Anees Chagpar is Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Louisville and is Director of the James Graham Brown Cancer Center Multidisciplinary Breast Program and Director of the Norton Breast Health Program at the University of Louisville. She received her medical degree from the University of Alberta, and her surgical training at the University of Saskatchewan and the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Stephen A. Feig, MD

Stephen Feig is professor of clinical radiology at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine and director of breast imaging at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Calif. He is past president and a founding member of the Society of Breast Imaging and recipient of the Society's Gold Medal. He is editor of Seminars in Breast Disease and of Breast Diseases: A Year Book Quarterly. Dr. Feig is nationally and internationally recognized for his leadership in clinical mammography, breast imaging research and advocacy of screening. Board certified in radiology, Feig was formerly at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. Dr. Feig received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

Dennis Holmes, MD

Dr. Holmes is a board certified surgeon specializing in the treatment of breast cancer. A graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine, the University of California San Francisco-East Bay Residency, and the University of Southern California Breast Fellowship Program, he is Director of Intraoperative Radiotherapy and the Chief Breast Surgeon for the USC Kenneth Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Los Angeles County Medical Center. Dr. Holmes is also Co-Director of the USC-Hoag Breast Fellowship Program, Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at the USC Keck School of Medicine.

Gail Lebovic, MD

Gail Lebovic is director of women's services for Cooper Clinic at Craig Ranch. In 1986, she received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine. After an internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, she performed her surgical residency at Stanford University Medical Center and completed two fellowships - one in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the breast and another at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Lebovic has also invented several medical devices and co-founded a number of companies in the area of women's health including Biolucent, Inc., makers of the MammoPad"! breast cushion designed to make mammography more comfortable.

Jean Lynn, RN, MPH, OCN®

Jean Lynn is an oncology nurse who has been a breast cancer advocate for many years. Ms. Lynn is Program Director in the Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials in the Office of the Director at the National Cancer Institute where she oversees the newly formed Breast Cancer Steering Committee and Symptom Management Steering Committee. Ms. Lynn received her nursing degree from Middlesex County College in Edison, NJ, a degree in health care management from the University of Maryland and a Master's degree in Public Health from George Washington University.

Seema A. Khan, MD

Seema Khan is Professor of Surgery in the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, and the Bluhm Family Professor of Cancer Research. She is the Co-leader of the Breast Cancer Program at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her research is funded by the NIH (NCI), and by the Avon Foundation. Dr. Khan serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and is a Founding Member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Cancer Risk Assessment & Management. She is a member of the Breast Cancer Screening panel of the NCCN.

Coral A. Quiet, MD

Coral Quiet, MD, co-founded Arizona Breast Specialists, and serves as Medical Director of the Arizona Institute for Breast Health (AIBH), a nonprofit service organization, which she co-founded. Dr. Quiet earned her medical degree at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. Dr. Quiet's areas of specialization include breast cancer (breast preservation and wellness), high dose-rate radiation brachytherapy (both endobronchial and esophageal), and traditional external beam radiation therapy.

Richard Reitherman, MD, PhD

Richard Reitherman received a Ph.D. in neurosciences at UCSD, and an MD degree from the University of Southern California. He has been a dedicated breast radiologist since 1989 and his practice currently specializes in breast MRI. Dr. Reitherman was an early adopter of the technology in 1996 and has worked to introduce and develop its utilization in breast cancer diagnosis, staging, and screening.
