The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) presented Presidential Citations to 10 leaders who have demonstrated exceptional service to ADEA. The awards were presented by 2008-09 ADEA President Charles N. Bertolami, D.D.S., D.Med.Sc., at the opening ceremony of the 86th ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition in Phoenix, Arizona.
"ADEA thanks the recipients of the 2009 ADEA Presidential Citations for their distinguished service to the Association and dedication to advancing the dental education community," said Dr. Bertolami.
Citations were presented to:
Charles J. Alexander, Ph.D., Associate Vice Provost for Student Diversity and Director, Academic Advancement Program, University of California, Los Angeles
As Dean for Student Affairs at the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry, Dr. Alexander created and implemented the first and largest postbaccalaureate program in dentistry for economically and educationally underserved populations. Under his supervision, more than a hundred previously unsuccessful applicants gained admission to dental schools, and many have gone on to dental specialization.
Vivek Shetty, D.D.S., Dr.Med.Dent., Professor, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry
As a surgeon, scientist, and scholar educated at the University of Bombay, the University of Regensburg, and Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Shetty has brought an international perspective to his work. His research of the management of facial trauma in minority populations has revealed the disproportionate impact of interpersonal violence among the economically and educationally disadvantaged. Dr. Shetty is a role model for other international students and professionals seeking an academic career in the United States.
Stephen M. Zeck, D.D.S., Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry
After a full career in practice as a general dentist, Dr. Zeck entered academic dentistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. He has become a role model for the "re-entry dental professional" through his commitment and enthusiasm to his work. Dr. Zeck also represents the second-career practitioner able to offer a diverse set of experiences to dental education and upon whom dental education will increasingly depend.
Brian L. Schmidt, D.D.S., M.D., Ph.D., Program Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry
Dr. Schmidt holds dental, medical, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSFD) and represents the "grow your own" category. He is a talented and charismatic clinician, teacher, and scientist. In his position of Program Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UCSFD he has inspired nearly every student and resident throughout the years to follow his example.
John W. Killip, D.D.S., Clinical Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Student Programs, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry
Dr. Killip was recognized for his extensive service to ADEA. His past and continuous contributions to the work of the Association have exemplified commitment and dedication to ADEA and the dental education community. He has served on nearly every possible committee and task force of the Association. Most notable is his service on the ADEA Council of Faculties, the ADEA Board of Directors, the ADEA Annual Session Planning Committee, and now the ADEAGies Foundation.
Gerald N. Glickman, D.D.S., M.S., Professor and Chair, Department of Endodontics, Baylor College of Dentistry
As an educator with passion for quality in dental education, Dr. Glickman's leadership drove the revision of the Competencies for the New General Dentist that were accepted by the ADEA House of Delegates at its Closing Session last year. Now as a member of and contributor to the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI), Dr. Glickman continues to promote these values in an active way.
Leo E. Rouse, D.D.S., Dean, Howard University College of Dentistry
Dr. Rouse served more than 25 years in the Dental Corps of the United States Army concluding his career as Commander and Chief Operating Officer of the entire U.S. Army Dental Command at the rank of Colonel. Instead of retirement, he chose academic dentistry at the Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD). He currently serves as Dean of HUCD. Following in the footsteps of previous deans at HUCD, Dr. Rouse continues a tradition of innovation and compassion.
William D. Hendricson, M.S., M.A., Assistant Dean for Educational and Faculty Development, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School and Senior Consultant, Academy for Academic Leadership
Prof. Hendricson began his career conducting research and working with others on professional development programs for faculty in dentistry and other health professions at the University of Illinois and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has served as a consultant to over 160 universities and associations including 55 dental schools. His contributions have been significant to ADEA. As Associate Editor of the Journal of Dental Education (JDE) for the past eight years, he has transformed the JDE into one of the most widely read journals in the health professions. Now as a member of the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI), Prof. Hendricson continues to enhance the quality of dental education.
Kim C. D'Abreu, M.P.H., Associate Director, Center for Community Health Partnerships, Columbia University.
As Deputy Director of the Dental Pipeline Project at Columbia University, Ms. D'Abreu's work has given dental schools across the United States the tools and resources they need to expand their missions to include the education of a diverse workforce. She has worked with others to obtain funding from a number of foundations, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the WK Kellogg Foundation, and the California Endowment to support this work that is critical to reducing health care disparities.
Kenneth L. Kalkwarf, D.D.S., M.S., Dean, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School.
Dr. Kalkwarf is the longest serving dean of a dental school in North America. He became Dean of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School on July 1, 1988. Well-regarded for his consistent efforts to promote consensus, his contributions to ADEA are extensive. He has a rich history as an ADEA representative to many commissions, councils, and task forces, including being elected ADEA President-elect in 2005 and serving as ADEA President in 2006.
