AMSA Turns 50! Australia
Main Category: Medical Students / TrainingArticle Date: 29 Apr 2009 - 4:00 PDT
Over the past few years, AMSA has been trawling through its archives trying to find out more about its past in an attempt to put together a comprehensive written and oral history of the organisation. The AMSA story is a fascinating one indeed - born from a small network of likeminded students in the 1960s, AMSA (like many in that decade) had a rather political adolescence in the 1970s, before maturing to the multifaceted advocacy and professional organisation it is today. Its alumni have gone on to excel in a variety of fields, and its events like the National Convention continue to be the highlight of any medical student's calendar. At this year's Convention, to be held in Queensland in July, AMSA will be unveiling a project that a specially convened History Project Working Party and this year's AMSA executive been working hard on. The AMSA Alumni Association will be a network for all former Australian Medical Students, and will serve as a great opportunity for networking, mentoring, philanthropy and other events.
We will also be hosting a reunion of former AMSA executive alumni at the Gala Ball at the Convention. This will be a unique chance to reconnect with the old friends, hear a bit more about the past and future of the organisation, share an evening with the medical students of today and witness the unveiling of the freshly minted Honour Boards for Former Presidents and Honorary Life Members to be hung in AMA House in Canberra.
If you are a former AMSA President, Honorary Life Member, Executive member or Convention Convener (or know any of your colleagues who are), we would love to get in touch with you.
