Three new cases have been confirmed of humans being infected with swine flu in the United Kingdom. This brings the total to five, according to Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The new cases include a 12-year-old girl from Torbay, an adult from Birmingham, and another adult from London. All three new cases are said to have mild symptoms and are responding well to treatment.

The authorities have closed down the 12-year-old girl's school as a precautionary measure and all pupils have been offered antiviral medication.

The two original cases involved two people from Lanarkshire, Scotland. According to Nicola Sturgeon, Scottish Health Secretary, both patients have responded to treatment and are recovering well in hospital - their symptoms were mild. Authorities are contacting people who have been in contact with the two infected people.

Alan Johnson, UK Health Secretary, told parliament another 25 cases are being investigated.
