Age Concern and Help the Aged are hoping to inspire people across the UK to use their feet to reduce their carbon footprint this spring, with the launch of the Charity's national fundraising event: the Big Spring Walk.

Taking place from 11 -17 May, the Big Spring Walk will see members of the public leaving their cars and travelcards at home and pledging to walk instead to raise funds for disadvantaged older people.

Commenting on the event, Patrik Ewe, Events Manager at Age Concern and Help the Aged said: 'This event is all about taking small steps to make a big difference to our environment. We're calling on people everywhere to walk to work, with friends at the weekend, on a treadmill at the gym or anywhere their feet take them.

'Hopefully their efforts won't just help make a difference to the lives of older people - it will help raise awareness that walking is a simple way to reduce your carbon footprint and make a difference to the future of the planet.'

Other ways that people can get involved in the Big Spring Walk are through pledging to walk any distance in return for sponsorship, arranging a walk with friends and family, or by taking part in the flagship event which kicks off the Big Spring Walk in London's Hyde Park on 10 May.

All money raised from this year's event will go towards funding the work of the Charity, including helping to combat poverty among disadvantaged older people.

For further information and a FREE walking pack, please contact the Big Spring Walk hotline on 020 7239 1922, visit http://www.helptheaged.org.uk/walk or text WALK to 82100.

2. Now in its third year, the Big Spring Walk was previously a Help the Aged fundraising initiative. However, with the joining together of Age Concern and Help the Aged, this year's event promises to be the biggest and best yet.

3. The event will see individuals walking for the Charity between 11 and 17 May. To find out more, call the Big Spring Walk hotline on 020 7239 1922 or visit http://www.helptheaged.org.uk/walk
