The Medical Protection Society (MPS), the world's largest indemnifier of healthcare professionals, has announced the key figures who will head up the new Edinburgh office when it opens in June 2009.

Dr Rob Hendry, previously a GP in Dundee before becoming a medicolegal adviser in Scotland in 1997, has been appointed as Head of Medical Services in the Edinburgh office. He will be responsible for leading the medical team in Scotland.

Dr Hugh Harvie, who previously spent 19 years at the helm of MDDUS's dental division, has been appointed as Head of Dental Services in Scotland. He will be assisted by Helen Kaney, a trained dentist and solicitor who also joins from MDDUS. She will take on the role of Dentolegal Adviser.

The team in the Edinburgh office will offer assistance to doctors and dentists with clinical negligence claims, complaints and disciplinary procedures arising from Scotland and other countries.

Dr Hendry said, "Health and legal policy in Scotland is increasingly divergent from England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulatory and legislative framework in which healthcare is practised is becoming ever more complex, and MPS has a key role to play not only in representing and supporting members but also in informing and advising decision makers about the implications of public policy for healthcare professionals and their patients. Establishing a base in Edinburgh will enable MPS to more effectively carry out this role."

MPS offers advice, support and legal representation to over 260,000 doctors and dentists in more than 40 countries around the world. We have been supporting and helping healthcare professionals for around 110 years and now have over 7000 members in Scotland.

Typical issues that we deal with include clinical negligence claims, medical and dental council investigations, fatal accident inquiries, disciplinary procedures and ethical dilemmas. By opening a new office in central Edinburgh we will further improve the quality of service delivered to Scottish members and increase our membership.

Notes

1. MPS has three UK offices based in London, Leeds and Edinburgh

2. The Medical Protection Society is the leading provider of comprehensive professional indemnity and expert advice to doctors, dentists and health professionals around the world.
