Despite reports of pharmacies providing cash incentives to patients to provide them with methadone, the current system is still valid, writes Dr. Aslam Anis from the University of British Columbia in a commentary. It may not be detrimental to the care of those receiving treatment for addiction.

Pharmacies dispense methadone daily to people in treatment for heroin withdrawal with pharmacists observing the ingestion. However, people often spend financial incentives provided by pharmacies on buying other illicit drugs.

"Regardless of the competitive behaviour of some pharmacies, making methadone maintenance treatment as widely available as possible is socially beneficial," he writes.
