The E.U. on Tuesday authorized $11 million in humanitarian aid to Zimbabwe, VOA News reports (VOA News, 6/2). The E.U.'s actions come one day after U.N. agencies expressed the need for $718 million in foreign donations to help meet the urgent needs of the people of Zimbabwe (Kaiser Daily Global Health Report, 6/2).

The funds, which will be distributed by non-governmental groups, the international Red Cross and U.N. agencies, will be used to help improve the health and water supply services in the country, the European Commission said in a release (European Commission release, 6/2).

VOA News examines the upcoming visit of Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to Washington, D.C., early next week. Tsvangirai is expected to encounter a sympathetic, but hesitant reception in Washington, trying to convince congressional leaders and U.S. aid officials that providing budgetary support will strengthen proponents of change in Zimbabwe," the news organization writes (Lesser, VOA News, 6/3).
