Last week the FDA knocked the wind out of asthmatics by requesting the manufacturers of Singulair, a popular leukotriene blocking asthma and allergy drug, to upgrade their warning against psychotic side effects. Further respiratory distress was imposed on Zicam users when the FDA also last week announced warnings that the drug may cause a loss of smell.

What's an allergy sufferer to do?

The manufacturers of the ALCAT Test, a food intolerance test, suggest going back to Hippocrates' dictum, "Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food". Last week while the FDA was issuing warnings about allergy drugs in the United States, researchers from the University of Pavia (Italy), Polyclinic San Mateo, were reporting at the annual Congress of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) held in Warsaw, Poland, that the ALCAT Test can accurately predict foods that cause GI problems and dermatological symptoms.

The researchers reported that 54% of patients with GI problems, and 86% of patients with chronic urticaria and dermatitis, experienced, "significant improvement" merely by avoiding foods indicated by the ALCAT Test. The only treatment was avoidance of specific foods that were shown through the test to cause inappropriate immune activation.

The ALCAT Test is a simple blood test that requires only a small quantity of blood. The results are specified to each individual, based upon their own unique biochemical and genetic makeup. The test is quickly becoming recognized as a way to safely and effectively avoid chronic inflammatory and allergy like problems, like asthma, perennial rhinitis and skin problems, but also metabolic disorders that interfere with weight loss, and other inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and migraine, without the use of drugs.

Hippocrates must be smiling.
