Main Category: Public HealthArticle Date: 03 Jul 2009 - 0:00 PDT
Homeshare International is bringing together programme coordinators, academics and policy makers from around the world. They offer participants a fantastic opportunity to learn more about running a successful Homeshare programme and also present the growing evidence base for the effectiveness of Homeshare as a policy option.
What is Homeshare?
Homeshare is increasingly seen as a vital means of supporting people in their own homes. They meet housing needs and encourage positive intergenerational relationships. Essentially Homeshare is an exchange of housing services where a householder, typically an older person, offers low-cost or free accommodation to a homesharer for an agreed level of help. The householder may need help with the household tasks, some financial support, or a combination of both. It also offer the householder security and companionship. Homeshare also offers an attractive solution to the homesharer, especially for young people at the start of their careers; they can study or work part-time whilst getting affordable accommodation. This mutually beneficial arrangement can build long lasting friendships and enrich their lives. Key workers such as nurses are among the beneficiaries.
