You know we're coming to the Emerald City for our annual convention, and you know there's been a lot of talk about our hosting the world-renowned fishmongers from Pike Place Fish Market.

Controversy aside, the American Veterinary Medical Association's 146th Annual Convention is about a lot more than fish tossing. And we'd like to highlight a few of the programs for you and your news staff. We expect about 10,000 attendees, and our convention session lineup and exhibit hall cover everything from companion animals to global health.

- Our exhibit hall will be buzzing with activity, as more than 200 exhibitors will be on hand with traditional products and services, as well as some rather unique items, such as frozen yogurt for dogs and memorials for the garden that include encased ashes of the family's beloved pet. Exhibit Hall hours are 9:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Saturday through Monday, and 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tuesday.

- With unrest in Honduras, even basic needs for its residents are threatened. But an effort to provide veterinary care in the country has also resulted in improved health care for both animals and people. Catch the Human-Animal Bond in Honduras on Monday, July 13, at 10:25 a.m.

- Even as our global population rises, our world is getting smaller. As more and more people and animals travel the globe, disease is spreading. The AVMA's first-ever Global Health Summit, which will be held on Saturday, July 11, beginning at 9 a.m., and on Sunday, July 12, beginning at 8 a.m., details the challenges we face and outlines some solutions.

- Experts on raw milk will address its benefits and its pitfalls during a daylong program on Sunday, July 12, starting at 8 a.m. The program culminates with a panel discussion featuring the nation's top authorities on the topic.

- Antimicrobial resistance, a hot topic in the news and on Capitol Hill, will be explored on Sunday, July 12, starting at 8 a.m., from the human, animal and retail meat perspective.
