How infants and young children develop the ability to control their actions, and how they learn their food preferences were among the topics which were discussed at the Developmental Psychology Section Annual Conference 2009; part of the British Psychological Society.

The conference took place between 9 and 11 September at Nottingham University and Nottingham Trent University.

Keynote speakers include Professor Adele Diamond, University of British Columbia, Canada, and Professor Karen Littleton, University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Professor Diamond's research examines how children develop the ability to control their actions and thoughts. Her work impacts on medical treatments for disorders like ADHD, and educational practices worldwide.

Professor Littleton undertakes research into learning in the classroom, and is particularly focussing on how new technologies can enable and resource learning and teaching.

Other topics being discussed include:

- Learning to read - and developing a sense of rhyme and rhythm
- Bullying in schools - including "cyber-bullying"
- The development of brain function in young infants

The full programme, along with other information about the conference, is available at http://www.bpsdevelopmental2009.org
