Diabetes UK has launched a DVD aiming to raise awareness of the seriousness of Type 2 diabetes among the UK's South Asian population.

The short film, called 'Meethi Baatein' or 'Sweet Talk', highlights the risk factors and complications of Type 2 diabetes, and has been produced with the South Asian Health Foundation and Pink Sequin Productions.

It is in English and Hindi to make it accessible to a wider audience.

The story

The DVD tells the story of Bobby, who is celebrating his birthday by eating and smoking too much. Bobby's wife and his best friend are very worried about his health - Bobby is overweight, doesn't do any physical activity, and has a family history of diabetes.

One evening, Bobby's beloved sister, Dolly, has a massive heart attack due to diabetes. Bobby is devastated. Will this terrible shock make Bobby finally admit his own risk of diabetes? Will he change his lifestyle?

Higher risk

"People from South Asian communities are up to six times more likely to have diabetes than the white population living in the UK, and South Asians who develop diabetes are three times more likely to have heart disease and four times more likely to have kidney failure," said Jenne Dixit, Equality and Diversity Manager at Diabetes UK.

Raising awareness of Type 2 diabetes

"We hope this DVD will help raise awareness of Type 2 diabetes and support the management of diabetes in a community that is at high risk of developing the condition."

How to get a copy of the DVD

20,000 copies of the DVD will be distributed for free to the South Asian population at Diabetes UK events.

The DVD can also be ordered by calling 0800 585 088 with the product code 7826, and from our online shop, or by visiting the South Asian Health Foundation website. Postage and packaging costs apply.
